Inside the covers of this book you will find two campaignvariants based on the Roman Invasion of Britain. One is mapbased, where success and failure depends on controlling asmuch of southern England and Wales as possible. Full detailsare given for Roman armies and for the various British tribalarmies that they will encounter, as well as special rules forsome of the more colourful military leaders.
The second campaign is narrative based, where players fightout six historically based scenarios taken from the real storyof the invasion and simply see who can win the most pointsby displays of successful generalship.
Any of the historical battles can be played out independentlyas pre-packaged games for an evenings entertainment. I havechosen battles that present unusual and interestingchallenges and that are different to each other. There isnothing wrong with a simple line up two equal point armiesand fight game on flat terrain, but you dont need to lay outhard earned cash on a supplement for that purpose.
I also offer some advice on designing your own scenarios. Please note, I am not claiming to be a wargaming guru withsome sort of deep insightful hidden knowledge. I am justrelating my thoughts and conclusions based on my ownexperiences of successful, and not uncommonly unsuccessful, scenario design.
At the back, you will find an alternative basing system forthose with smaller armies and tables but who still like to use28 mm figures. I, myself am in this camp.
What you wont find here is detailed historicalinformation, except where pertinent to explain mythinking behind a particular issue. There are so manyinternet sources freely available, as well as inexpensivepopular history books in both dead-tree and eBookformats, so it would be tedious to rehash the information. Those who wish to grasp modern ideas about historywould do far better reading books by professional andpopular historians than by fellow wargamers.
History may not change but our interpretation of history isconstantly changing as new material comes to light and oldinformation is examined from new perspectives. Onlyprofessional academics have a hope of keeping up with thisand often only professionals have the detailed background knowledge to intelligently interpret new data.
